Golden hour is the time of day just after sunrise and just before sunset, when the sun casts a golden light. It makes the world look a million times more beautiful, but it also is the best time for your outdoor session for so many more reasons!
1) It creates a beautiful, story telling, emotive mood that adds so much to your photos. It makes your images feel warm and takes the image from “yeah thats a great picture” to “wow that’s an amazing photo”. When you’re taking the time and effort to get professional photos done, you may as well do everything you can to maximize the outcome of your images. It may seem like a hassle to schedule your session late in the evening or early in the day, but when you look back on the images you will be glad that you got these beautiful emotive memories.
2) It really helps not staring into a super bright light during your session, like the light you get in the middle of the day. This also helps to cast an even light on your skin and avoid any unflattering shadows. In the middle of the day, you’re normally wearing sunglasses or squinting because of the bright sun. The last thing you want is to be squinting in your photos. The golden light makes everything look magical, from the grasses and trees, to you!
But What about the kids?
In the summer time usually a golden hour session means sacrificing bedtime for the little ones- which I understand can be super difficult. It is only one night that you have to sacrifice bedtime, which can work for some families! If this doesn’t work for you, you can aim for a springtime session or a fall session so that you can still get those glowy family photos without having to push back your toddlers bedtime! If it works for your schedule, its definitely worth it to aim for the later session time and let the littles sleep in the car on the way home!
